of your braces
After your braces are fitted, the team at Bamford Orthodontics will explain to you exactly how to look after them. It is important to care for your teeth and braces by keeping them very clean to maintain their condition.
Here are some helpful reminders in caring for your braces.
Keeping teeth clean
If you have braces, it is important to keep your teeth and gums clean to avoid plaque build up. You will want to make sure you are brushing and flossing, as well as using the interdental brushes we provide as needed. Here are some additional tips:
- You should be brushing your teeth three times a day, especially after meals. We recommend carrying a toothbrush with you at all times and using fluoride mouthwash every evening to protect your teeth from decay.
- Continue visiting your family dentist for regular check-ups and cleanings throughout your treatment.
- If you have a removable appliance, soak it in a retainer cleaning solution once a week. You can also clean it with a toothbrush and water, but don’t use toothpaste.
Foods to avoid
Your lifestyle will generally stay the same once you have your new braces, but there will be a few changes you will need to make to your diet to avoid breakages.
You will want to avoid any foods that are hard, sticky or sugary. This includes foods such as toffee, caramel and lollies. Hard and crunchy foods such as apples, raw carrot, nuts, biscuits, and celery are best eaten by cutting them up into small pieces and chewing with the back teeth.
Fizzy and soft drinks, even the diet variety, can cause damage to your teeth so should be avoided during treatment. Chocolates and sweets should be kept to a minimum and only eaten at meal times.
Dealing with breakages
Dental emergencies are rare and most issues have simple fixes. If part of your brace becomes loose or broken, please call us as soon as possible to schedule a time for repair.
